What is Toastmasters?

Hello everyone, this is Y.T, President of Visionaries TMC.

I have been a member of this club, or Toastmasters, for three years. I really enjoy our activities and would recommend many people to start Toastmasters journey. However, as soon as I introduce Toastmasters to my friends or colleagues, any people just say, “What the hell is Toastmasters…?” So, today, I’d like to introduce what Toastmasters is.

Toastmasters International websites says about itself as the follows:

“Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. Headquartered in Englewood, Colo., the organization’s membership exceeds 358,000 in more than 16,800 clubs in 143 countries. Since 1924, Toastmasters International has helped people from diverse backgrounds become more confident speakers, communicators, and leaders.”

As you can see, Toastmasters is an international organization originated in the US and it aims to develop public speaking skills and leadership. It’s not a cult group:)

Toastmastersって何？

はじめまして、Visionaries TMC会長のY.Tです。

私はこのクラブ、ひいてはToastmastersに入会して約3年が経ったのですが、本当に入って良かったと思っています。個人的には、沢山の人にToastmastersというものを知ってもらい、経験してもらいたいと思っているので、友人などに紹介するのですが、大体「Toastmastersって何？」と言われてしまいます。そこで今回は、Toastmastersとは何なのか、ご紹介いたします。

Toastmasters Internationalのサイトを見ると、以下の説明があります。
『Toastmasters Internationalは非営利の教育団体。世界中にクラブがあり、そのネットワークの中で、パブリックスピーキングとリーダシップを養成することを目的としております。コロラド州イングルウッドに本部を構え、世界143の国で、16,800クラブ、35.8万人の会員を擁しております。1924年の創設以来、多種多様な人々に対し、自信を持って話しをする、良好なコミュニケーションを取る、リーダーになるお手伝いをしてきました。』

以上のように、Toastmastersとは米国発祥の国際的な組織で、スピーチやリーダーシップの要請を主な目的としています。決して怪しい組織ではないのですね。
