The evening opened with our usual good-news round, where a member shared a summer side-trip to Osaka — a baseball game at Kyocera Dome, a night exploring local food, and a morning at a standing sake bar before catching a Michelin-listed okonomiyaki spot. Small, everyday stories like this are exactly what our good-news round is for: a low-pressure way to practice narrating your week in English before the “real” speaking starts.

 Table Topics Session

This session’s theme was “What is Art?” — inspired by a book that had reshaped the Table Topics Master’s own thinking. Members were asked to weigh in on where the line between art and everyday objects really sits.

The standout answer came from a first-time guest, who was handed a genuinely tricky prompt: is a sculpture, a painting, a building, or a cup of instant noodles “art”? With no time to prepare, she reasoned her way through it live — landing on the idea that art is simply what stirs a personal feeling — and closed by admitting the one landmark she still hasn’t visited is Yokohama’s Cup Noodle Museum. It was sharp, funny, and completely unscripted — and it won her the Best Table Topics Speaker award on her very first try.

 Prepared Speech Session

TM A.K. delivered “My Clock, Your Clock,” the story of a 12-year quest to pass her 6th-dan kendo exam. She walked us through the exhaustion of repeated failure, a phone call from a friend that pulled her back in, and exams sat across four seasons and four cities — landing on the message that everyone moves at their own pace, and falling behind is often just taking the long way around.

TM W.M. followed with “Follow Your Passion,” a persuasive speech built on his own shrinking free time as a university student balancing lab research with basketball and music. His case: don’t wait for spare time to appear — make time for what you love now, because there’s less of it waiting for you later.

 Evaluation & Feedback

TM H.I., evaluating for the very first time, praised the kendo speech’s strong opening question and its vivid, concrete details — and suggested a touch more pacing control to let the key moments land. Guest evaluator TM D.Y-R. broke down the passion speech’s persuasive structure and solid supporting evidence, and offered a practical tip: rehearse the introduction and conclusion in isolated repetitions rather than running the whole speech end-to-end each time.
