📝 Meeting Summary

An inspiring evening unfolded as our hybrid meeting explored the timely theme of elections and communication! With a general election scheduled for the next day, TM S. masterfully guided us through thoughtful discussions about leadership, information sources, and democratic participation – all while keeping things light and thought-provoking. Two enthusiastic guests joined us to experience firsthand how we transform current events into opportunities for meaningful English practice.

🎉 Opening & Recent Updates

TM S. welcomed everyone as our Toastmaster of the Evening, acknowledging the whirlwind that January had been – from extreme cold and snow to the upcoming election. Despite the hectic atmosphere outside, the warmth inside our meeting space was palpable as members and guests gathered to sharpen their communication skills together.

🗣 Table Topics Session

The Table Topics session brilliantly navigated the delicate balance of exploring election-related themes without diving into divisive political territory. TM S. prepared eight thoughtful questions focusing on communication, leadership, and information literacy – topics that resonated deeply in our current media landscape.

One standout moment came from TM S., who delivered a compelling response about information sources during elections. Rather than relying on social media with its echo-chamber algorithms, he advocated for reading multiple newspapers to gain a well-rounded, 360-degree perspective. His honest admission about enjoying fighter jet videos on YouTube but recognizing the danger of algorithmic bias for serious topics like elections struck a chord with everyone. The contrast he drew between using social media for hobbies versus seeking unbiased thinking through traditional media highlighted the sophisticated media literacy we all need in today’s world.

🎙 Prepared Speech Session

1st Speaker: “Atami Trip” – TM M.

TM M. shared a delightfully honest family adventure that had us all smiling and nodding in recognition! His story began with the impressive news that both his daughter and son won awards at the MOA Children’s Art Exhibition, earning the family a generous 72,000 yen prize. But the real heart of his speech wasn’t about the accolades – it was about the beautifully messy reality of family travel.

His vocal variety brought every moment to life: the irritation before even reaching Atami, the mood-lifting power of delicious seafood, his 4-year-old son’s museum meltdown, and the dreaded discovery of yet another lost cap. The speech’s authenticity resonated because we’ve all been there – trying to create perfect family memories while managing the chaos of real life. His project focused on understanding vocal variety, and he masterfully used tone and pace to convey shifting emotions throughout the journey.

2nd Speaker: “Open the Heavy Door” – TM T.

TM T. delivered a profoundly moving speech that left the entire room in reflective silence. He opened with a powerful metaphor about heavy doors we keep locked in our hearts – doors with nameplates of people we’ve judged and avoided. For him, that nameplate read “Father.”

Through vulnerable storytelling, he shared a decade-long estrangement rooted in feeling criticized and controlled throughout his childhood, education, and career choices. The turning point came when a friend at a retreat challenged him: “Go have a drink with your father, just the two of you.” What followed was a three-hour conversation that transformed everything.

The emotional shift in his delivery was remarkable – from tense and fearful at the restaurant entrance to warm and open by the end. When his father softly confessed feeling sorry for not being there during TM T.’s career journey, the breakthrough happened: “I realized I was just a child, and he is just a human.” The fresh breeze hitting them as they left the restaurant became a perfect metaphor for the heavy door finally opening.

His closing challenge to us was gentle but profound: if we have someone locked behind a heavy door in our hearts, and if time still allows, perhaps send a small message – “Let’s talk together.” That small knock might open doors and bring fresh air into our futures.
