Meeting #389 drew one of our biggest guest turnouts in recent memory — four first-time visitors in one night. Between a folktale-inspired storytelling relay that had the room in stitches and two prepared speeches about pushing through sand dunes and turning 60, it was a night that showed just how far a little impromptu courage can take you.

🎉 Opening & Recent Updates

The evening opened on a light note, with our President joking about the seasonal air-conditioner standoff at home — wanting to keep it running a little longer, only to be overruled by a spouse watching the electricity bill. Small, relatable moments like this are exactly how we warm up the room before the real speaking practice begins — and with four guests in the audience for the first time, the energy in the room matched the word of the evening perfectly.

🗣 Table Topics Session

This session’s theme was inspired by a classic Chinese folktale about an old man whose “unlucky” lost horse eventually became “lucky” — and back again, again and again. Each speaker had to take the previous story and flip it from good fortune to bad, or bad to good, live and on the spot.

The standout moment came from one of our first-time guests, who took the chain to its darkest and funniest extreme — spinning a tale of an escalating criminal partnership that ended in permanent lockup, delivered with such vivid imagination that it left the room laughing and the Table Topics Master genuinely impressed. Not bad for a first attempt at zero-prep storytelling in a second language.

🎙 Prepared Speech Session

TM T.L. delivered “Over the Dunes,” a vivid account of climbing a punishing 70-degree slope at the Tottori Sand Dunes in summer heat — using the climb as a metaphor for the idea that the only thing you can really control is how you react to the ground shifting under you.

TM S.K. followed with “Career, Beer, and Cheers,” a reflection on turning 60 and standing at a career crossroads — retirement, a new job, teaching, coaching. His wife’s blunt advice (“I don’t care what you do, as long as you can pay for your own beer”) became the surprisingly grounding philosophy behind his next chapter.

🔍 Evaluation & Feedback

Guest evaluator TM Y.N. praised the sand dunes speech’s vivid gestures and easy-to-follow storytelling, while suggesting the closing message be stated a touch more directly. TM S. broke down the structure of the career speech as clear and well organized, and encouraged more vocal variety and body language to match its energetic theme.
