📝 Meeting Summary

Meeting #387 kicked off punctually at 6:30 sharp with a full house — one first-time guest from the United States, two first-time-eligible prepared speeches, and a table topics theme that had everyone trading tips for surviving Japan’s brutal summer heat. Between an icebreaker speech looking back on a career pivot and a deeply personal talk about yoga and self-discovery, it was a night that showed just how much ground a single meeting can cover.

🎉 Opening & Recent Updates

The night opened with our usual “good news” round, where members share a quick highlight from their week. One member described an unusually productive day — an early morning walk, a café breakfast, two online English lessons, and a gym session — all before showing up to the meeting still ready to give a prepared speech. It’s a small window into how members build English practice into everyday life, not just once every two weeks.

🗣 Table Topics Session

This session’s theme was health — specifically, how to survive Japan’s uncomfortable, humid summers. Members fielded questions on everything from recovery foods to unconventional remedies like sweet potato tea, each turning a simple daily-life topic into a structured, on-the-spot answer.

The standout moment came from our guest, tackling a Table Topics question live for the very first time. Jumping into an impromptu speech cold, in a room full of strangers, is exactly the kind of pressure this club is built to help you get comfortable with — and it clearly resonated with the room.

🎙 Prepared Speech Session

TM H.I. delivered his very first prepared speech, an Icebreaker titled “What I Can Do.” He walked us through his career path — from the automotive industry to consulting to software engineering — and landed on a reflection about Japan’s economic challenges, closing with an honest question he’s still working through: what can he personally do to help.

TM W.O. followed with “Listen to Your Voice,” sharing ten years of practicing (and now teaching) yoga. She traced how yoga — and a memorable teacher who lives between the U.S. and Japan — helped her move past not knowing her own mind, and pushed her to start dancing, singing, and drawing again.

🔍 Evaluation & Feedback

TM A.M. evaluated the Icebreaker speech, praising the vivid self-introduction and suggesting a few well-placed pauses could help pace the content even better. TM Y.T. evaluated the yoga speech, highlighting the strong eye contact and audience interaction throughout, while noting that leaning a little less on the script would let that connection shine even more.

🏆 Awards

  • 🏅 Best Table Topics Speaker: TM H.I.

  • 🏅 Best Prepared Speaker: TM A.M.

  • 🏅 Best Evaluator: TM Y.T.
