📝 Meeting Summary

A fresh start deserves fresh conversations — and that’s exactly what Meeting #379 delivered! With April marking the start of a new fiscal year in Japan, the evening’s theme of “Graduation and New Beginnings” set a reflective yet energizing tone from the very first minute. From heartfelt Table Topics responses to a truly unforgettable prepared speech, this was a meeting that reminded us all why we show up and keep growing.

🎉 Opening & Recent Updates

TM T. welcomed everyone as Toastmaster of the Evening, kicking off the meeting with the spirit of a new beginning. Club President TM S. opened with a warm introduction to the Toastmasters format for our guest, setting the stage for an evening full of real English practice in action. With the new fiscal year freshly underway, there was a natural buzz of energy in the room — new goals, new challenges, and new stories to tell.

🗣 Table Topics Session

Table Topics Master: TM S.

The theme was “Graduation and New Beginnings,” and TM S. crafted questions that invited everyone to look back — and forward — with honesty and a touch of nostalgia.

One response that stood out came from TM S., who tackled the question: “When starting something new, which is stronger for you — excitement or anxiety?” Without hesitation, TM S. admitted it’s anxiety, every time. But what made the answer memorable was what came next: rather than fighting the nerves, TM S. prepares — intensely and repeatedly — until that worry transforms into confidence. As a real-life example, TM S. shared an upcoming trip to Bangladesh and a presentation being rehearsed dozens, even hundreds of times. It was a genuine and relatable insight for anyone who has ever stood at the edge of something new and felt their heart race. The lesson? Preparation is the bridge between fear and confidence.

🎙 Prepared Speech Session

1st Speaker: “There Is Light Where It Seems Darkest” — TM O.

This was TM O.’s first prepared speech, and it left the entire room speechless. In a deeply personal and courageous address, TM O. shared a story of growing up with a physical condition that meant long periods of hospitalization, limited mobility, and the gradual suppression of emotions just to cope with what felt like too much pain. Yet out of that darkness came an unexpected gift: painting.

TM O. described how art became the one place where emotions — so carefully guarded in daily life — could finally be expressed freely. A teacher’s words, “You should continue this for your whole life,” became a turning point. Today, TM O.’s paintings move people deeply; a cancer patient reportedly looks at them every day for comfort. The speech closed with an announcement of an upcoming solo exhibition in May, and a message that resonated long after the applause faded: “There is light where you think it is dark.” As the Toastmaster of the Evening put it afterward, “I have never seen such a speech in my life.”

🔍 Evaluation & Feedback

Evaluator: TM S.

Praised TM O.’s powerful storytelling and the emotional clarity of the speech’s central message. Noted that while the speaking time ran slightly over, the depth and sincerity of the content more than made up for it, and encouraged TM O. to refine pacing for future speeches.

General Evaluator: TM L.

Gave a comprehensive review of the full meeting, commending the strong thematic coherence across all sessions. TM L. highlighted time management as an area for collective improvement — a good challenge to carry into next time — while celebrating the warmth and thoughtfulness that characterized every single speech of the evening.
