📝 Meeting Summary

Another lively Saturday evening at Visionaries! Members gathered online to share life updates, compete in Table Topics, and experience one of the most thought-provoking prepared speeches in recent memory. From impromptu stories about everyday shopping habits to a deeply moving reflection on history and peace, the evening reminded us of just how wide a range of ideas English can help us explore and express.

🎉 Opening & Recent Updates

TM H. opened the meeting warmly before handing the floor to tonight’s Toastmaster of the Evening, TM A. After introducing the meeting roles — with TM Y. serving as Grammarian and TM L. as Ah-Counter — TM A. presented the Word of the Evening: “claim.” He shared a sharp insight that resonated with everyone in the room: while Japanese speakers often use “クレーム” to mean “complaint,” in English “claim” actually means a request or assertion of rights. A classic false friend — and a genuinely useful reminder for business professionals who deal with overseas partners!

Members then shared their recent news. TM A. had spent two and a half months battling an unresponsive appliance company over a washing machine — a story that had everyone laughing at the relatable frustration of being passed between salespeople. TM Y. had a much more relaxing update: a family trip to Otaru, where even a kaiten-zushi restaurant served surprisingly fresh and generous portions. TM H. was counting down the days to a well-earned Golden Week vacation. The warm, candid exchanges set a great tone for the evening ahead.

🗣 Table Topics Session

Table Topics Master: TM H.

TM H. kicked off the Table Topics session in style — literally. Inspired by the custom-made jacket he had received that very day, he designed the entire session around the theme of clothing and shopping habits. Each question invited speakers to reflect on purchases: the most satisfying item they’d ever bought, the most useless, and how they decide whether something is really worth the price.

One standout response came from TM L., who shared a charmingly unexpected story: she had recently started watching baseball and, caught up in the excitement, ended up buying a team uniform — even though she had no idea where to wear it! Her delivery was lively and her story captured the impulsive joy of discovering a new passion, earning warm laughter from the whole group. TM Y. ultimately took home the award, with his thoughtful take on the balance between personal values and external recommendations when making a purchase.

🎙 Prepared Speech Session

1st Speaker: “No More Kamikaze” — TM H.

TM H. delivered a speech that stayed with everyone long after it ended. He described an unexpected detour on a family trip to Kagoshima — a visit to the Chiran Peace Museum, dedicated to the young kamikaze pilots of World War II. He admitted he had known almost nothing about the place beforehand. What he found there moved him deeply: the museum displayed personal belongings, military uniforms, and farewell letters written by pilots as young as 17, many of whom spent only a few days at Chiran before departing on their final missions.

What gave the speech its real power was TM H.’s personal reflection. Seeing the pilots’ ages — some younger than his own daughter — made the historical facts feel immediate and human. He closed with a message that felt both personal and universal: learning history is not just about understanding the past, but about making sure we don’t repeat it. If you ever visit Kagoshima, he said, go to Chiran. It is not an easy place to visit — but it is an important one.

🔍 Evaluation & Feedback

Evaluator: TM L.

TM L. offered a balanced and structured evaluation, highlighting three strong points and three areas for growth. She praised TM H.’s compelling speech title, his expressive facial delivery that brought the emotional weight of the story to life, and the powerful moment where he connected the pilots’ young ages to his own family. Her suggestions for further development were constructive and encouraging — a thoughtful piece of feedback that TM H. himself acknowledged had given him new things to consider.

General Evaluator: TM Y.

TM Y. reflected on the overall flow of the meeting, noting that with more members taking on prepared speech roles in future meetings, the club would have even richer opportunities for growth and inspiration. He encouraged everyone to step up and put their name on the agenda!
